His POV parts from the volumes that were animated so far imply that he loved Liz platonically, like a family member/sister, yet she fell in love with him and there was a lot of grief between the two because he was unable to reciprocate. While he compares Liz and Anne over their crying outbursts, he doesn't realise that Anne is in love with him, he's just growing aware, little by little, that his own feelings for her are different from how he felt for Liz. Because he is falling in love with her, and that's why this arc is supposed to be helpful to them, in another way as well

They get hungry, but they can't feel any other taste aside from the sweetness of the silver sugar( Challe explained that during their first stay at one of those forts when she gave him soup and he showed her that fairies absorb their food by holding it or hovering a hand over the dish). Hunger to them is in general just a need for nutrients, and only a search for joy when the food is made of silver sugar.
